NYPT and our Head Personal Trainer Roody Dallemand are proud to introduce Muscle Activation Techniques, a new and unique service that will improve the quality of your life and functional capacity. Muscle Activation Techniques (M.A.T.) is biomechanical/ neuromuscular-based rehabilitation technique aimed at decreasing chronic pain, improving postural alignment, increasing joint range of motion and quality of motion. MAT was developed by Greg Roskopf, a biomechanics expert who has worked as a consultant for the Denver Broncos and the Utah Jazz.
MAT is a revolutionary rehabilitation technique that has been gaining popularity in the sports world. Athletes from every sport use MAT specialists to speed up recovery time, prevent injury, improve athletic performance and increase the mobility and stability of their joints. MAT is a very safe and versatile modality that can address many issues. MAT succeeds in the reduction and elimination of pain and fatigue, as well as enhancing muscle recovery in athletes and non athletes alike. Clients who suffer from chronic pain (lower back, knee, shoulder and neck), postural misalignment (Scoliosis, leg length discrepancy), gait issues and lack of flexibility can benefit greatly from MAT.
The Science behind MAT Muscle balance is a popular concept in the rehabilitation/fitness fields and is key to functionally appropriate mechanical wear on joints. The main function of muscle is to contract to create joint motion and more importantly stabilize joints to decrease improper wear and tear.
Factors such as stress, trauma and overuse will cause muscle inhibition/neuromuscular weakness. The result causes the body to compensate by tightening the antagonist musculature of the inhibited muscle to protect the body from moving into a vulnerable position. Muscle imbalances are then created due to the fact that inhibited/neuromuscular weak muscle causes a change in the length and tension of the surrounding muscles. When the length and tension of muscles are altered proper joint mechanics can’t occur which leads to improper wear and tear, shifts in posture and chronic pain.
M.A.T assesses motion to find asymmetries (limitations in motion). Upon finding an asymmetry, Neuro-Proprioceptive response tests are used on all the muscles associated in the asymmetry. Palpations/isometrics are then used on all the muscles that tested weak to restore proper proprioceptive input to the inhibited muscle. The result is an improved feedback from the central nervous system to muscles improving body function and turning weak links into useable functional resources. Only a MAT certified specialist can perform Muscle Activation Techniques. Mr. Dallemand has completed the rigorous MAT 10 month internship with over 300 hours of required coursework and over 500 hours of hands-on experience.
